Electronic Theses and Dissertations Initiatives

This page contains listings for both university-based and commercial ETD initiatives. These projects represent attempts to institutionalize the production and distribution of this particular genre of electronic scholarship.


The ETD Project at Virginia Tech

"The Southeastern Universities Research Association, Inc. (SURA) has funded Virginia Tech's electronic thesis and dissertation project so that the University can develop and disseminate a standard method for making graduate students' final work available online. Additional funding for the project is being provided by the U.S. Department of Education's Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education (FIPSE), as well as Adobe, IBM, Microsoft, and others."

Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations

A national expansion of the Virginia Tech pilot project, funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education.

The University of Virginia Library's ETD Initiative

The Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD) project offers students the opportunity to submit their works electronically. ETDs will be stored in a digital library and made available through VIRGO as full-text searchable documents.

University of Waterloo Electronic Thesis Project Team

"It is the intention of the Electronic Thesis Project Team (ETPT) to explore the governance issues and technical feasibility of submission, storage and distribution of ETDs at the University of Waterloo. The overall goal of the team is to identify and explore all of the issues which would be involved in an ETD being accepted as the sole form of submission by a student in the fulfillment of the thesis requirement of her/his graduate program."

ProQuest Digital Dissertations from UMI

"To facilitate digital access to scholarly works, UMI has made a commitment to convert all incoming paper dissertations and theses to Adobe PDF format. Beginning with 1997 titles, UMI will build a comprehensive digital archive of every dissertation and thesis submitted for publication, regardless of the format in which it was submitted. By the end of 1997, UMI's ProQuest Digital Dissertations will have over 45,000 titles, all accessible in digital format."

West Virginia University's ETD Project

OxAc (Electronic Publishing with Oxford Academic)

An electronic publishing venture based in the UK: "OxAc is a new publishing house whose aim is to disseminate exciting and original scholarly research mainly by electronic means. Our particular interest lies in the electronic publication of doctoral theses that bear significant intellectual value, but are yet likely to be turned down by conventional academic presses. We aim to publish 1,000 monographs by the the end of 2001."
