For Amy and George, Beloved Scholars
My work on this bibliography was supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, which gave me a year off to work on another Jefferson project, and this one developed in tandem with it. I appreciate the help I have received from the reference librarians and the staff of the inter-library loan office at the Rush Rhees Library of the University of Rochester. Thanks also are due to librarians at Harvard University's Widener Library, Divinity School Library, and Littauer Library, as well as to librarians at the Boston Public Library, the Rundell Library in Rochester, the Library of Congress, and the Mason Library of Keene State College. Larry and Wendy White gave me a valuable base of operations while I worked at the Library of Congress. Patricia Neill offered good advice and moral support to help me work through computer problems. The University of Rochester English Department provided access to computer support, but David Sewell kept the hardware going. Jane Shuffelton read some of the Russian for me and provided support in many other less direct but even more important ways. Without her nothing would happen.
