The copyright owners of a manuscript accepted for publication in Essays in History retain ownership of their copyrights in the manuscript. However, by submitting a manuscript for publication in Essays in History, the owners agree that should it be accepted for publication, the editors shall have the right to publish and distribute their text electronically and to archive and make it permanently retrievable.
Each manuscript accepted for publication must be provided with a letter which states that those making the submission are the owners of the copyrights of the entire manuscript, and the letter must be signed by all of the owners. If this is not the case, the letter must indicate who is/are the owners of all or parts of it (designating the owners of each part), and provide copies of permission letters from each of those owners which are sufficient to provide the rights to Essays in History as outlined below. The letter should also indicate if the work has already been published elsewhere. (Essays in History is a primary publication, and usually does not re-publish articles published elsewhere).
Material that has appeared in Essays in History may be republished by the copyright owners at their own discretion, provided that Essays in History is acknowledged as the original place of publication. Material from Essays in History may be reproduced and distributed for criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, provided that such use satisfies the "Fair Use" factors stated in the U.S. Copyright Laws (17 U.S.C. Sec. 107).
