Ads from the Premiere Issue

The Ladies' commodity fetish extends to the advertising, which offers exotic goods, cures for skin diseases, sewing machines, corkwood and clothes. Six months into its nine-month run, the newspaper begins begging readers to tell merchants when they learn of their goods through The Ladies--a sign of its loss of viability. The newspaper predated by only a few years the explosion of advertising that turned women's magazines into an industry. (See White).
